“Connection is the energy that is created between people when they feel seen, heard and valued-when they can give and receive without judgment”
-Brene Brown, PHD, LMSW
I always feel gratitude when I can connect with people. When I was young my sister was diagnosed with autism at 28 months. I felt I couldn’t connect with my sister like other siblings could. I saw other siblings playing Barbies, going to parks, and going to movies.
I was going to therapy appointments with my sister and if we did go somewhere we would have to leave early due to her tantrums.
When I was in 4th grade I was diagnosed with epilepsy and depression. I didn’t connect with most of my peers. I would hide in my shell as I felt most peers would pass judgment and consider me lucky.
As I have gotten older, I have a more positive connection with people. Today was a perfect example. My family had a booth at Steps For Autism. We connected with so many amazing people. Hearing their stories and seeing their success brought joy to me.
The event had so much positive energy. Our family felt seen, heard and valued without judgment. Steps For Autism gives people hope and raise awareness on Autism. Plus we got to meet Shannon from MyTalk radio! I listen to her show when I’m driving.
